15 September 2015

  • METRO GROUP has been listed on the leading international sustainability index Dow Jones
  • Industry Group Leader in the Food & Staples Retailing category
  • Recognition for continuation of favourable trends in such key environmental performance indicators as greenhouse gases, energy and water consumption, and volume of waste

METRO GROUP has once again qualified for inclusion in the ranks of the world sustainability leaders in retailing in 2015 and has been listed on the leading international sustainability index Dow Jones Sustainability World as well as on the Europe index, as the rating agency responsible for the listings, Robeco SAM, announced. METRO GROUP has also been named the best company in the retail sector and as an Industry Group Leader in the Food & Staples Retailing category for the first time in its history. With this achievement, METRO GROUP has made clear improvements, and the company's sustainability score has climbed to 77 points from 71 points in the prior year.

"This year's distinction as an Industry Group Leader confirms that METRO GROUP successfully managed the trio of economic, ecological and social commitment on which the ranking is based. This accolade means that METRO GROUP is now one of the top performers in the retail sector also when it comes to matters of sustainability. I would like to thank all of our dedicated employees who implement and give life to our diverse programmes for sustainable business, both large and small in scope, on a daily basis," said Heiko Hutmacher, who is responsible for Sustainability on METRO AG's Management Board. "Of course, this top ranking on the index is also a challenge for us. We want to continue to improve in our pursuit of sustainable business for our customers, employees, shareholders and the environment."

The Dow Jones Sustainability Indices include those companies that represent the best environmental, social and economic performers in their particular industry. The DJSI World consists of about 10 per cent of the 2,500 largest companies for each industry listed in the S&P Global Broad Market Index. The DJSI Europe is made up about 20 per cent of the 600 largest companies for each industry in Europe. The basis for inclusion inthese indices is an analysis of companies' sustainability strategies and programmes that is conducted by the independent agency Robeco SAM by means of a comprehensive questionnaire as well as publicly available sources of information. A total of 100 criteria are analysed as part of this process.

METRO GROUP received recognition in the analysts' evaluation for its commitment to the ecological and economic dimensions of sustainability in particular. A positive assessment was made about the continuation of favourable trends in such key environmental performance indicators as greenhouse gases, energy and water consumption, and volume of waste, among other things.

In developing its sustainability strategy, METRO GROUP has used the Robeco SAM's ranking as its guide for many years. The issue of sustainability also plays a key role in long-term Management Board and Senior Management compensation of METRO GROUP on a worldwide basis, a trend which began in financial year 2013/14.

After being included in the DJSI World index for 12 years in a row, METRO GROUP shares temporarily dropped out of the top rank in 2012, but were re-accepted into the World and Europe indices in 2014 and the company became an Industry Group Leader in the Food & Staples Retailing category for the first time in 2015.
