METRO GROUP with new structure for Communications and Public Affairs

2 July 2010

In the framework of the integration of the holding companies of METRO GROUP and Metro Cash & Carry International also the responsibilities for communication in Germany’s largest retailing group have been restructured. Headed by Dr Michael Inacker, the corporate unit Communications, Public Affairs and Corporate Social Responsibility will in future be responsible for the activities of both, METRO GROUP and also its wholesale subsidiary Metro Cash & Carry.

"With this new structure we have created a strong and closely integrated unit for all communication activities and public affairs under the umbrella of METRO", said Inacker. "In particular with a view to the great significance of the wholesale business for the overall Group and the high level of internationality of Metro Cash & Carry it is important to speak with one voice".

In the framework of the reorganisation the department Corporate Communications of METRO GROUP will now cover the functions External Communication and Media Relations, Internal Communication, Group PR and Marketing as well as Digital Media for METRO GROUP and Metro Cash & Carry. This combined function will be headed by Peter Wübben who had up to now held the position of Head of Corporate Communications of Metro Cash & Carry.

The Media Relations department will be headed by Rüdiger Stahlschmidt, formerly Spokesman of METRO GROUP. Jeanette Hütten, who had been the spokeswoman for the German activities of the wholesale subsidiary, will now take the position of Spokeswoman of Metro Cash & Carry.

Also the department Corporate Relations has seen a change: effective 1 July 2010, Dr Rainhardt Freiherr von Leoprechting assumed the duties of a "Senior Executive Advisor to the Management Board of METRO AG". He also serves as President of the Turkish-German Chamber of Industry and Commerce and of the umbrella organisation of the European retail, wholesale and international trade association (EuroCommerce). His successor as Head of Corporate Relations is Michael Wiedmann, former Head of Corporate Development and General Manager of Metro Cash & Carry International.

The responsibility for all questions relating to national policy will remain with Michael Wedell, Head of the Representative Office in Berlin. Michael Wiedmann and Michael Wedell report to Dr Inacker.

METRO GROUP is one of the most important international retailing companies. In 2009 the company reached sales of around € 66 billion. The company has a headcount of some 290,000 employees and operates more than 2,100 stores in 34 countries. The Group's performance is based on the strength of its sales divisions which operate independently in their respective market segment: Metro/Makro Cash & Carry – the international leader in self-service wholesale, Real hypermarkets, Media Markt and Saturn – European market leader in consumer electronics retailing, and Galeria Kaufhof department stores.
