METRO GROUP increases emergency aid for flood victims in Pakistan to a quarter million euro

17 August 2010

In view of the continued dramatic situation in the flooded regions of Pakistan, METRO GROUP decided at short notice to extend its emergency aid for the people in distress. After Metro Cash & Carry Pakistan had already supplied donations in kind for a value of € 60,000 in the framework of an emergency aid package last week, the Düsseldorf-based retail group now increased its aid by another € 200,000. This includes both food and urgently required materials such as blankets and tents which are to be transported directly to the affected regions rapidly and unbureaucratically within this week.

"The suffering and distress of the people living in the flooded regions of Pakistan are unimaginable and grow daily. In view of the further deteriorating situation we decided on the weekend to extend our emergency aid further at short notice", said Dr. Eckhard Cordes, CEO of METRO GROUP. "In coordination with the local authorities in Pakistan we are compiling shipments of goods which the people need most urgently".

Metro Cash & Carry Pakistan was already able to provide local aid last week and supplied urgently needed food to around 5,000 affected families in Punjab and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa. With the help of the Pakistani authorities it was possible to distribute the goods fast and hand them over to the people affected. The shipments are continued and extended further this week: in addition to food also materials such as tents, blankets, cooking utensils and power generators will be provided for the Punjab province. A special aid package for children is planned which includes a total of around 3,000 dairy products, cookies and sweets. The supplies for a value of € 200,000 are presently being coordinated with the local authorities.

"We are presently mobilising all our procurement and logistics experts in Pakistan to ensure that the goods required will reach the affected regions as fast as possible", said Frans W. H. Muller, CEO of Metro Cash & Carry in charge of the region Asia. "What is important is that the people get what they need most urgently fast and unbureaucratically. Our trade infrastructure, good organisation and the dedicated support of the employees working in the five Metro wholesale stores in Pakistan make it possible to mobilise resources fast. The colleagues on site are working around the clock to provide relief goods and urgent supplies in close coordination with the local authorities and relief organisations".

Metro Cash & Carry has been represented in Pakistan since 2007 and currently operates five self-service wholesale stores in Lahore, Islamabad, Karachi and Faisalabad.

METRO GROUP is one of the largest and most international retailing companies. In 2009 the Group reached sales of around € 66 billion. The company has a headcount of some 290,000 employees and operates around 2,100 stores in 34 countries. The Group’s performance is based on the strength of its sales brands which operate independently in their respective market segment: Metro/Makro Cash & Carry - the international leader in self-service wholesale, Real hypermarkets, Media Markt and Saturn - European market leader in consumer electronics retailing, and Galeria Kaufhof department stores.
