General Manager Dr Rolf Giebeler to leave the company

Dr Rolf Giebeler (53), Head of Corporate Legal Affairs & Governance and General Manager of METRO AG, will leave the company at his own request and by mutual agreement with the Management Board and Supervisory Board on 31 December 2010. A successor will be announced soon.

Giebeler joined METRO AG in August 2005 as Head of Legal Affairs and Projects. In his role as General Counsel and General Manager, he not only was responsible for the legal affairs of METRO AG, but also worked closely with the legal departments of the sales divisions and country divisions of METRO GROUP. In addition, his areas of responsibility included managing the Corporate Office. In recent years, Giebeler, who also became the Chief Compliance Officer of the Group in 2006, energetically directed the establishment and expansion of the compliance organisation as well as risk management at the company.

In his various positions, Giebeler made a fundamental contribution to the reorganisation and further development of METRO GROUP. Critically important successes involving METRO GROUP's positioning and advancement were achieved in the areas he managed and oversaw during times of sweeping change at the company. Giebeler will now take on a new professional challenge outside the company.

The Supervisory Board and the Management Board thank Giebeler for the work he has done. "From a high-ranking position, Rolf Giebeler significantly contributed to the successful course of METRO GROUP," said the CEO of METRO AG, Dr Eckhard Cordes.

METRO GROUP is one of the largest and most international retailing companies. In 2009 the Group reached sales of around € 66 billion. The company has a headcount of some 290,000 employees and operates around 2,100 stores in 34 countries. The Group's performance is based on the strength of its sales brands which operate independently in their respective market segment: Metro/Makro Cash & Carry – the international leader in self-service wholesale, Real hypermarkets, Media Markt and Saturn – European market leader in consumer electronics retailing, and Galeria Kaufhof department stores.
