METRO GROUP with its sales divisions Metro Cash & Carry, Saturn and Galeria Kaufhof, is an international sponsor of the Eurovision Song Contest 2011. The retail group is thus one of the five international partners of the music contest. In addition, METRO GROUP will also support the programme of the state capital Düsseldorf.
Under the motto "Feel your heart beat" the major event is this year hosted in Düsseldorf from 10 to 14 May 2011. This is also where the headquarters of METRO GROUP are located. "The home of METRO GROUP is Düsseldorf but it feels at home everywhere across Europe and in the world at large. As an international retail company we share the central idea of the Eurovision Song Contest of bringing together people from the most diverse cultures", says Dr. Michael J. Inacker, Head of Communication and Public Affairs of METRO GROUP. Especially in Eastern Europe, one of the company’s growth regions, the music contest has many followers. Overall, METRO GROUP operates stores in 23 of the 43 countries participating in the Eurovision Song Contest.
In the framework of the Eurovision Song Contest a varied supporting programme will be organised which will also be backed by three sales divisions of METRO GROUP: the wholesale operator Metro Cash & Carry, the consumer electronics retailer Saturn as well as the Galeria Kaufhof department stores. "Retail is varied - just like the Eurovision Song Contest. In the framework of the Eurovision Song Contest we also want to show how diverse our sector is", says Inacker. Until the final event of the song contest on 14 May several hundred thousand visitors are expected in Düsseldorf. Metro Cash & Carry, Saturn and Galeria Kaufhof will also develop activities and programmes in the numerous European countries where they are represented.
Metro Cash & Carry Germany as official supplier
Many visitors of the Eurovision Song Contest will come into contact with Metro Cash & Carry also beyond the supporting programme. As the official supplier of the Eurovision Song Contest 2011, the wholesale operator will provide products for the big show and for select events of the supporting programme. In this context, Metro Cash & Carry will cooperate closely with the catering companies working for the event - one of the key customer groups of the wholesale specialist. In addition, the focus will be on one-stop solutions for caterers and kiosks.
METRO GROUP also sponsors the ESC Festival Stage of the state capital Düsseldorf where various music and entertainment programmes will be presented during the period from 30 April to 14 May. The City of Düsseldorf and METRO GROUP have already cooperated successfully on the occasion of their joint presence at the EXPO 2010 in Shanghai.
The organisers of the event expect a worldwide total audience of up to 120 million viewers from all across Europe to watch the Eurovision Song Contest on TV. As one of the official international sponsors, METRO GROUP will be mentioned in the credits of the TV show and will also feature on the official Internet website of the contest and on the official dressing of the City of Düsseldorf.
