METRO GROUP significantly increased its support for the DEG METRO STARS for the 2011/2012 season. According to current planning, METRO GROUP thereby laid a sound financial basis for DEG Eishockey GmbH in the 2011/2012 season. "We live up to our responsibility as the main sponsor and partner of the DEG", said Frans Muller, Member of the Management Board of METRO GROUP. "The DEG now has every opportunity for a successful repositioning and also the time needed to find a new main sponsor". The retail company has been the main sponsor of this ice hockey club with a long tradition since 2002 and will not extend its commitment after the 2011/2012 season. However, METRO GROUP will continue to support the DEG Youngsters.
The financial situation of the DEG METRO STARS recently developed such that a distinct increase of the financial support from METRO GROUP became necessary. With € 2.1 million for the 2011/2012 season, METRO GROUP more than doubled its commitment thereby once again exceeding the originally agreed sponsoring volume. "The uncomplicated assistance provided by METRO GROUP has saved the DEG", said Lance Nethery, Managing Director of DEG Eishockey GmbH. "We can now go into the new season with a financially sound basis and actively shape the repositioning of the DEG".
"METRO GROUP has been a strong partner of the DEG since 2002 and plans to continue supporting the DEG Youngsters also after 2011/2012. The company demonstrates great social commitment in Düsseldorf and has been contributing to the good reputation of Düsseldorf as a sports location for many years already. I would like to express my gratitude and appreciation for this to METRO GROUP", said the Lord Mayor Dirk Elbers.
"The DEG has a long tradition of presenting top-class ice hockey sports and is an important element of Düsseldorf as a sports location. We very much hope that the DEG will quickly find a new name sponsor who will succeed METRO GROUP in a long-term cooperation for ice hockey in Düsseldorf", said Elbers.
Following a decade of successful partnership, the DEG seconded by METRO GROUP and the City of Düsseldorf is calling on companies active in Düsseldorf and the region to support the DEG in future.
In the field of sponsoring, METRO GROUP supports many social projects like for example the national federation of the Deutsche Tafel food banks where it is the main financial sponsor. Moreover, METRO GROUP is also active in the field of mass sports like for example as name sponsor of the METRO GROUP Marathon in Düsseldorf. "Against the backdrop of its numerous projects and duties in the fields of sports, social affairs, culture and science, METRO GROUP cannot shoulder the now emerging distinctly higher sponsoring funds for the DEG", said Muller. This is why METRO GROUP decided not to continue its commitment as name sponsor of the DEG METRO STARS after expiry of the contract at the end of this season. "It is now up to the DEG to develop innovative concepts for a successful new start. We will actively support the DEG in finding a new main sponsor and further partners", said Muller. "This notwithstanding, we will remain associated with the DEG – something that is already demonstrated by our continued support for the DEG Youngsters".
